Hi Class,
For your first blog assignment you will need to do the following:
View this TedTalk: http://www.ted.com/talks/aaron_koblin.html
After you have seen the video, write a 300-400 word post exploring these types of questions: How do these technological experiments/art forms create glimpses and signs of our humanity? What does that humanity look like in a digital age? What do these visuals say about our culture? Why do these types of experiments exist?
Also, Think about the following statement: "An interface can be a powerful narrative device. And as we collect more and more personally and socially relevant data, we have an opportunity, and maybe even an obligation, to maintain [our] humanity and tell some amazing stories"
Don't be limited by the questions above. Pose your own questions and answer them to the best of your ability. I'm not looking for a certain kind of answer, but make sure you incorporate some type of interpretation regarding the rhetoric of these visuals.

ReplyDeleteThese technological experiments and art forms show how a large group of people can create a single piece of artwork that some how magically goes together. The fact that each contribution was done without knowing exactly what the final piece of work would be shows that humanity as a whole has the ability to work together and achieve something great. Technology allows for individual people to work together for a common goal without personal differences getting in the way. These visuals show that our culture is constantly coming and going from all around the world. There is constantly a steady flow of technology use throughout the country and the entire world. This is a new era which allows us to share data all around the world in a matter of seconds. Therefore we owe it to society to utilize this to better the world.
ReplyDeleteThe experiment with the drawing of the sheep shows that people are willing to do something without knowing what it is for. Only one person asked why they are supposed to be drawing sheep. This shows society's readiness to follow commands without questioning them. This aspect of society is somewhat frightening but used the right way allows for great things to be achieved much more quickly than ever before.
The music video of Johnny Cash compiles many different styles of drawings together to create a music video which uses pathos to create a common theme. Each drawing of Johnny Cash is in black and white and creates a dark yet nostalgic tone. Every picture is different but somehow they are all able to create the same theme that enables them to work together.
In the digital age, technology not only creates a way for us to express our humanity with creativity and ingenuity, but is constantly showing our humanity by just our use of it. For example, the graphic of the flight patterns across America was not, in any intention, artistic or expressive, but yet it portrayed our daily habits in travel and our lives. With just this visual, not only can you see the change in time due to the ebb and flow of flights, but you can see that flights are an expression of our lives.
ReplyDeleteWhen the speaker started to talk about the global cooperatives he has been working on, such as the Johnny Cash Project, the laser music video, and the music video by The Wilderness Downtown, Technology became the paintbrush in the artist’s hand, becoming a way for thousands of people to express their views, and their humanity.
Technology has ceased to be a luxury in lives, and has become our everyday lives. We use technology wherever we go, and whenever we are awake. From waking up to an alarm on a smartphone, to going to sleep while watching TV, technology effects our every waking moment.
